OUR LEGACY

Take This In:

6pm, mid-July.

2002.

The night is one of the most beautiful the year has seen yet; The sea is pounding, the sand on Long Beach is hot from hours and hours of baking in the sun.

The sky has melted into hot pink and it's streaked with those little white cloud trails that jets sometimes leave in their wake.

3 best friends, 2 second-hand boards, and a hunger to create a legacy. It took the hands of hundreds of people to craft this dream into reality, but the legend was born from the hopes and dreams of Gaia, Grayson, Cam and the hearts and souls of every aspiring Canadian surfer. This year we're coming up on the 16th birthday of this amazing organization.

Come join us.

Sure, Canadians aren't known for being surfers as much as we are for saying "Eh" or playing hockey. We don't have that surf bum rep like our southern neighbours in California or our buds down in South Africa.

But what the hell man-

Let's make surfing the new hockey.

We are Tofino.

We are Canadians.

We are Coastal North.

FAQS

ASK AWAY.

Home: FAQ

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH PROGRAM TO SIGN UP FOR?

First, you're probably gonna want to ask yourself, "How good of a surfer am I?"

Don't lie to yourself!

We have camps and training courses specifically sculpted to fit each and every type of surfer, whether it be amateur, pro, or anything in between. The three general questions we like to ask our participants with the same inquiries are:

"Do you know which foot you feel more comfortable with in front of the board?

Do you know which of your feet is the pivotal? (Back foot)"

"Have you ever been surfing before? If so, have you been more than 10 times?"

"Do you know basic water safety, such as how to act in dangerous situations such as strong rip curls or under toe?"

If you answered no to the majority, then one of our summer beginner's camps is probably best for you. In the beginner's camps that take place in the summer, we cover everything from how to identify and pick a board that's best for you from a variety of surfboards, how to stand up once you catch waves, basic balance method/positioning, and constructive technique on how to steer and maneuver your board.

Beginners are not excluded from, but highly discouraged from participating in our winter camps.

Despite the freezing cold ocean temperatures and hair-whipping wind and snow not particularly bringing in the bank from tourists in wintertime, the colder months are the top-notch peak surf seasons on Vancouver Island. It's not uncommon to see waves easily topping 20 feet. The swell is stronger, the weather is stormier, and the water is pretty damn cold.

Don't get us wrong; the winter camps are a BLAST.

They offer the best hands-on experiences in terms of learning on the spot and creating life-long muscle memory. You will not forget what you learned at the winter camps, that's a promise.

However we strongly recommend surfers in our winter camps have had a fair amount of prior surf experience and are comfortable in grey water that can often drop below freezing. Winter camps are generally composed of intermediate and advanced students.

If you've surfed more than 10 times, you're probably close to intermediate or at least have-somewhat-of-an-idea-what-you're-doing level.

Our advanced and expert courses are reserved for those who have surfed more than fifty times. You can maneuver and turn your boards naturally and with ease. We offer these camps those who compete, those who are smart and intelligent and understand the risks of being in coastal oceans and those of which can unexpectantly nag you in a riptide. Advanced and Expert surfers are comfortable in any ocean conditions, including out of the white wash and in the green water, and including on rough and stormy days.

We often hold new student orientations at Shelter restaurant... Email us with more level placement questions or join us up at Shelter for a "consultation"!

HOW MUCH IS EACH PROGRAM?

SUMMER BEGINNER: $339.99 CAD
SUMMER INTERMEDIATE: $399.99 CAD
SUMMER ADVANCED: $540.00 CAD
WINTER CAMPS: $399.99

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

Scroll down to the bottom of our page, and sign up in the black contact section. Be sure to add which program you're interested in along with your email and the week you'd like to participate. We currenty are only accepting PayPal transfers as method of online payment, however you can also pay by cash or check.  Be sure to give it to us at the beginning of camp or send it with your kid!

WHERE DO WE STAY?

All camps are located right in the heart of Tofino on Neill street. Students have the choice to stay in coed or gender-separate cabins. This is where we do our training, eating, and just general hangin out.  Cox Bay, North Chesterman, and Mackenzie Beach are where we go for the bulk of our daily 3-4 hour surf sessions.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

Students have the option of meeting us at the Tofino Bus in Departure Bay, (the Nanaimo ferry terminal) if no other form of transportation is desired or convenient. From here it is about a 3 hour trip to Tofino. Normally the fares are $46-$55 dollars roundtrip depending on the age of the individual and whether or not they are a student, but if this is the transportation method you prefer, Coastal North can cover half your fare with a camp discount. About $30 will be suitable for fare, email us for more information on getting a ride with us on the Tofino bus!
