Here's How We Do It

TRANSPORTATION

Tofino is one of the most beautiful, rural, sparsely populated, and quirky towns in British Columbia. With that, unfortunately, comes a journey that may not win the award for "Most Convenient." Situated on the very edge of the Western front of Vancouver Island, Tofino is a four hour drive at least for most campers and even more for others. But have no fear! When structuring this camp, we covered any problems that could occur in the process of your child's commute to Tofino. Parents are welcome to drive their children right to the base of our camp, if they're willing to do so. If they are not, however, which is completely understandable, then we can have them delivered by a bus line called "Tofino Bus". The Tofino buses parked in Departure Bay Nanaimo are the ones you're gonna want to catch; So campers already living on Vancouver Island, this should work perfectly for you. Campers on the mainland, however, will need to make the commute to Departure Bay via the Nanaimo sailing from Horseshoe Bay. You may see Tofino Buses parked in Horseshoe Bay at the time, but DO NOT CLIMB ABOARD UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO MAKE A BUS TRANSFER AND PAY TWICE. The buses lined up in Departure Bay are the ones set to do the Vancouver Island routes. The ones in Horseshoe Bay drive to Vancouver Island, drop off tourists, and turn around and drive right back to Vancouver. We will include what buses your children will need to catch in additional emails and such. If this is the transportation method desired, then $30 of it will be covered in our pricing and deducted from your camp fee.

CELL PHONE POLICY

Campers are welcome to bring their cellphones and personal devices to camp, always. However, we do have a time frame starting at 10PM (right after their curfew) where they're permitted to hand over their cellphones for lockup. The reason we do this is to ensure a good night's sleep for our 7AM wake-up calls and so they have plenty of energy for daily three hour surf sessions. Campers are welcome to stay up and chat, read, play cards, etc. quietly in their dorms at night. We will be surfing for three hours every day from 11-2,  while the waves are at their peak height. Campers are welcome to bring devices down to the beach with them but may not reply to texts/phone calls as we lockup bags in the cars and spend the majority of the time catching waves! Other than the time between 10AM and morning, students are permitted to use their cell phones whenever they like.

FREE TIME

Here at Coastal North, we like to believe we are pretty generous with freedom and relaxation periods. Campers return from surfing at around 2:30 and are free to explore/look around the shops of Tofino without councillors, as long as they are with at least one other camper. Dinner calls are 6PM sharp where campers are permitted to show up to eat and for a check-in. After dinner, campers are free to go back outside and hang out/shop around a little until 10PM. (Please talk with your child about the curfew check-ins, as they are extremely important to be present in and they ensure that your child is safe and responsible.) Campers who do not show up within half an hour after the  check-ins (both the 6 and 10) will not be allowed to go out for curfew the next day.

A Message from Manager Josh:

Due to past situations, (typically involving members from the BOYS dorms, ) we conduct thorough bag checks before each curfew. I'm not going to be vague here, I'm not going to beat around the bush; If your kid is caught with

- Weed

- Alcohol

- Cigarettes

- Vaporizers/E-pens

- Other drugs/substances

Parents will be called and campers will be sent home. We are very serious about this at Coastal North. If your plan is to join our camp to get away from your parents and the law and spend the week under the influence, then we strongly recommend you reconsider your motives for wanting to participate. If that is the kind of thing you're into, great, but please do it with your friends on your own time where you are not putting our program and any of the other campers at risk.

Thank you,

Josh

WHERE DO WE STAY?

DORMS & CABINS

This is the standard accommodation for kids at Coastal North. Cabins are available for girls only, boys only, and co-ed groupings. The cabins are all located on Neill Street, right in the heart of downtown Tofino. Easy and convenient for things like outlets to charge your personal devices, close to shops and grocery stores, a block away from the skate park etc. But boys beware... Manager Josh's office is directly above YOUR dorm!!

CAMPING

Our camping trip outings are specifically designed for those who like to venture on the wild side. Nope, there is no wifi, and yes, the only places to shower and charge your cellphones are in the communal bathrooms. Coastal North takes a lucky 10 from each camp to Bella Pacifica, a ground situated right on the edge of Long Beach, to have bonfires, cook amazing food, make incredible new friends, and surf the insane masses of waves that come pounding the shores of Vancouver Island's lesser touched coastlines.
